Highland Plantation is a small, rural community located in Somerset County Maine, nestled in the northwest mountains, southwest of Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake and Dead River. It is an area rich in natural beauty and dense forests. Home of Briggs Hill, Bald Mountain, Witham Mountain, Sandy Stream and Michael Stream.
With a sparse population and a deep connection to Maine’s wilderness, Highland Plantation remains a testament to Maine’s rugged, independent spirit. Known for its scenic beauty, and deep-rooted connection to its natural landscape, Highland Plantation embodies the charm and solitude of Maine’s lesser-traveled regions. A quiet retreat for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful, off-the-grid lifestyle. The area is rich in wildlife and provides opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.
Long Falls Dam Road begins in New Portland and ends near the Long Falls Dam and Dead River. It is the only paved road through the plantation. The Old Schoolhouse, located at 2185 Long Falls Dam Road, is still in use for public meetings, appointments, voting and Town Meeting.
